Anniversary Ring Etiquette Guide

We believe that relationship anniversaries are important milestones that should be celebrated.

They commemorate the time you have spent with your significant other and the love that you have shared.

Among married couples, anniversary rings are steadily replacing more traditional anniversary gifts like paper given for the first year of marriage, or wood for five years. Still, many are unsure about which anniversary they should mark with an anniversary ring, or what ring style would be best to choose.

If your anniversary with your spouse or partner is approaching and you are considering marking it with a stunning ring, read on….

When to gift an anniversary ring?

In Western cultures, anniversaries include 10-year, 15-year, 25-year, and so on. Typically, anniversary rings are given to women, although some couples choose to mark their anniversary with matching anniversary bands.

Each couple is different and may choose to celebrate other events that are significant to them, like the anniversary of their first date or the day they got engaged or renewal of their vows. Some may celebrate important life events such as buying a house or having a child.

Whatever the anniversary, talk to Gary Meaden Jeweller about handcrafting a beautiful anniversary ring.

The popular anniversary styles: rings and bands.

While it is not uncommon to go for a vintage or antique engagement ring, especially if it’s a family heirloom, anniversary rings tend to be more modern. They can come in different settings and feature stones of various colours, a trend that has also become increasingly popular with engagement rings.

While a traditional engagement ring would typically be a diamond solitaire, anniversary rings don’t usually have one centre stone. Instead, they are set with multiple stones. A particularly popular anniversary ring style is a three-stone ring, where the three stones represent the past, the present and the future of a couple’s life together. Similar symbolism comes with the eternity band, with diamonds featured all around the band, symbolising an eternity, no beginning and no end. Both styles represent the unbreakable bond of everlasting love.

Do men also receive anniversary rings?

In the past, it was the women who usually received anniversary rings as gifts, but nowadays men are wearing them too. A man who gets an anniversary band may choose to wear it instead of his wedding band. Some may wish to wear both, with the wedding band staying put on their left hand, and their anniversary band on their right hand.

Unsure of how to wear an anniversary ring?

There are several ways to wear an anniversary ring, depending on the style of the ring.

An anniversary band can be paired with your wedding band and engagement ring. Or you could choose to wear an anniversary ring in place of your engagement ring. If your wedding band and engagement ring make a perfect match and you don’t want to add any items, you can always wear your anniversary ring on your right hand.
